Distilled Water vs Demineralized Water

When considering the benefits of Distilled Water vs Deminalized Water it is important to recognise that although both are very pure types of water, they are produced using different methods.  Distilled Water is produced through a distillation process whereby water is heated in a vessel until water vapour is formed.  The water vapour is collected in a separate vessel, cooled and as it cools it condenses, returning to a liquid state again.  This liquid is Distilled Water which has almost no impurities such as heavy metals, trace elements or minerals.

Demineralized Water is also known as Deionized Water and its production relies on the use of ion exchange resins in a resin bed.  Demineralized Water is produced by using Ion Exchange resins where the water passes through porous beds of resin.  As the water passes through these porous beds of Ion Exchange Resins, the Ions in the water exchange with the Ions in the resin bed and Deionised Water is produced.

The degree of purity of Demineralized or Deionized Water can result in water that meets recognised international standards such as set down by the European Pharmacopiea (EP), the British Pharmacompiea (BP), the United States Pharmacopiea (USP) and the Japanese Pharmacopiea (JP) as examples.  If Deionized Water is then put through another mixed bed of ion exchange resin, this is described as 'Double Deionized' or 'Polished Water', both names referring to the same product.  Invariably this produces even purer water with a conductivity level of less than 0.1 microsiemens per centimetre.

When considering your purchase of Distilled Water vs Demineralised Water, it is worth remembering that Distilled Water is more expensive to produce than Demineralised  Water as the process of distillation is more time-consuming.  In practice, Demineralized Water can be used for many of the applications that Distilled Water is used for but there are some applications where Distilled Water use if essential.    For example, the enamelling industry relies on the use of Distilled Water to prevent the enamel from ‘bubbling’.  The automotive industry relies on Distilled Water to top up lead-acid batteries and to help prolong their life.
