Use Distilled Water

Before you use Distilled Water it might be worth checking with us that it is Distilled Water that you need.  There are a number of different types of ‘purified’ water and these can vary quite significantly.  Distilled Water is produced through means of distillation, a process whereby water is heated, steam or water vapour collected in a separate vessel, then cooled, condensed and the resultant liquid is pure, clear Distilled Water.  This water contains virtually no contaminants such as trace metals, trace elements or minerals and the distillation process is entirely natural.  It uses no chemicals, additives or preservatives.  However, the distillation process is quite time-consuming and therefore Distilled Water can be more expensive to buy that other types of ‘pure’ water.

It is possible to use Distilled Water for a number of applications both in the home and in industry.  Firstly, in the home one of the most common way to use Distilled Water is in filling the water reservoir in steam irons.  Many people prefer to use Distilled Water rather than Tap Water as the trace elements in Tap Water are prone to collect and block the holes in the sole plate of the iron.  As the iron’s efficiency relies on its ability to vent steam through the steam vents, clearly this is jeopardised when the vents become blocked.

A number of industries use Distilled Water as part of their processes.  For example, companies in the enamelling industry use Distilled Water rather than Tap Water which can cause the surface of the enamel to ‘bubble’ due to its impurities.  Distilled Water is the choice for topping up lead-acid type batteries in the automotive industry as the contaminants in Tap Water can reduce the life expectancy of the battery.  Distilled Water is also the preferred water for putting in engine cooling systems as Tap Water can damage the efficiency of the cooling system.  These are just some of the ways in which companies use Distilled Water in their various processes.

When you use Distilled Water it is important to understand how it should be stored.  The container should be kept at between 15 and 25 degrees Centigrade.  It should be kept out of direct sunlight and moisture and should be kept away from extremes of temperature e.g. frost.  The container should remain sealed because once the container is opened, the Distilled Water will start to deteriorate as it picks up trace elements from the atmosphere.  Carbon Dioxide, in particular, will affect the conductivity of Distilled Water.  Once the container is opened, the Distilled Water will start to pick up trace elements in the atmosphere which will affect the conductivity, particularly where it picks up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
