Distilled Water Uses

There are many and varied Distilled Water uses both in the home, in the laboratory and in industry.  The Water Distillation process is one of the oldest methods of producing pure, clean water and is a completely natural process.  It does not rely on the use of artificial chemicals, additives or preservatives and indeed, the water distillation system mimics the production of rainwater in Nature.

In the home, one of the most common Distilled Water uses is in steam irons where, due to its lack of minerals and trace elements, bottled Distilled Water has the advantage of never ‘blocking up’ the steam vents in the soleplate of the iron.  Tap Water contains many trace elements and other impurities and these can easily ‘block up’ the steam venting system and reduce efficiency of the iron.  By using Distilled Water in the water reservoir, this will help to extend the lifespan of the iron and improve its ironing efficiency.

Another common Distilled Water uses in the home is in home aquariums.  Again, tap water contains many impurities which can be harmful to aquatic organisms.  Distilled Water contains virtually no contaminants.  However, using Distilled Water only in home aquariums is not recommended as fish can actually benefits from tiny amounts of trace elements and minerals commonly found in Tap Water.  The best solution for many people with home aquariums is to mix Tap Water with Distilled Water, bring purity with just a very small amount of mineral elements for the optimum health of the fish.

In industry, uses for Distilled Water include automotive cooling systems where the lifespan of the cooling system is extended due to the purity of Distilled. Water.  Minerals and ions commonly found in Tap Water can corrode the internal parts of a vehicle engine and can rapidly cause depletion of any-corrosive additives present in most anti-freeze mixtures.  When Tap Water is used for cooling systems this can also lead to problems with rust.

Also in the automotive industry, manufacturers prefer to use Distilled Water to ‘top up’ lead-acid batteries.  Again, the impurities and trace contaminants found in Tap Water can seriously damage the delicate balance within a lead-acid battery and using Distilled Water in this way can greater enhance the life expectancy of the battery.

In the laboratory, Distilled Water is specifically used for calibration in density metres.  Uses for Distilled Water also include HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography) and AA (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) analysis or indeed any chemical or laboratory analysis where purity is of the utmost important.
